Construction began on the $385M Terminal C project in April 2006 to accommodate the ever-increasing number of travelers using RDU and efficiently guide passengers through ticketing, security, gates, and baggage claim. The voluminous terminal has 180 foot long clear spans with up to 50 foot high ceilings. The Terminal C facility will nearly triple in size to 920,000 SF. The terminal also includes a larger more efficient federal inspection facility to process more international flights and passengers. Unique large arched wood trusses were used to create the rolling roof structures, which is finished with continuous stainless steel standing seam roof panels, some over 400 feet long. The 23-gate concourse is 2,180 feet long and continues the finishes from the terminal of terrazzo flooring, granite wall panels and stainless steel columns.
