North Halsted Bridge project receives NSBA Merit Award
Walsh Construction received the National Steel Bridge Alliance’s 2014 Steel Bridge Competition Merit Award (Medium Span Category) for the North Halsted Street Tied Arch Bridge project in recognition for outstanding design in structural steel.
The bridge consists of a 157-ft. long, 180-ft. wide steel tied arch main span flanked by two 36-ft. precast concrete arch approach spans. The new bridge deck is 22 feet wider than the old bridge and carries two additional lanes of northbound and southbound traffic. The bridge also provides bike lanes and pedestrian sidewalks on each side and better accommodates boat traffic through an expanded 12 -ft., 4-in. vertical waterway clearance.
Construction began in late 2010, and the bridge was opened for traffic just a year later. With its sleek design, the bridge improves traffic flow - and aesthetics - over the Chicago River North Branch Canal.
