Veterans Memorial Bridge wins National Award of Excellence
The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes design-build best practices, announced the 2016 National Award of Excellence winners at the Design-Build Conference & Expo Awards Dinner in Las Vegas.
The Veterans Memorial Bridge project in Martin County, Florida was recognized with the National Award of Excellence in Transportation. The project's funding partner and contract administrator was the Florida Department of Transportation, District 4; the facility owner and maintaining agency was Martin County; Archer Western was the design-build contractor and RS&H served as lead engineer.
"This year's Design-Build Project/Team Award winners are the best we've had. Our jury was particularly impressed that as we advance awareness of Design-Build Done Right™, design-build is producing exceptional outcomes as measured by owner satisfaction." said Lisa Washington, CAE, DBIA's Executive Director/CEO.
The design-build of the Veterans Memorial Bridge features a 3,000-foot bridge spanning the St. Lucie Waterway providing an additional crossing between Palm City and Stuart, FL. The structure is a 19-span concrete-beam bridge utilizing the new Florida I-Beam shape and hammerhead-type piers. The bridge varies in width from 109 feet to 123 feet, allowing for four travel lanes, bike lanes and protected sidewalks.
The project is a premier example of the design-build approach meeting challenging schedules and fostering innovation to produce a cost-effective project.
