Walsh Canada has generously donated $20,000 to George Brown College to fund scholarships for students enrolled in the Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies (CCET). The award, formally known as the Walsh Canada Bursary for Safety and Academic Excellence, will be awarded to registered full-time students, enrolled in the Angelo DelZotto School of Construction Management who are in their final year of studies, maintain a cumulative program GPA of 3.0 or higher, a GPA of 3.5 or higher in a construction safety course, and exhibit an overall passion and commitment to their chosen area of professional studies.
Promoting workplace safety in the construction industry is a top priority for Walsh Canada and its gift recognizes George Brown's efforts to ensure students are learning about the necessary skills and measures needed to create safe work environments.
Walsh Canada's Vice President, Craig Lesurf, helped create the League of Champions, an initiative of the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) focused on helping companies in the construction industry build a culture of safety. Lesurf, who also serves as chair of the program advisory committee for George Brown's Construction Management program, has said that the goal is to mobilize companies in the business of construction to promote workplace safety in the community and raise the bar for safety performance.
"Safety is not just a company or industry objective – the only way the industry can do better is by helping to educate every individual so they have the knowledge and tools to be safe on the job," he says.
The donation was celebrated at a presentation on April 20, 2017 at the Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies' Annual Student Awards Ceremony. In attendance at the event were Walsh Canada's Vice President & Business Group Leader, Craig Lesurf, Marketing Manager, Jack Leonetti and Project Manager, Sal Cozzoli. Also in attendance were the Vice President, Corporate Services of George Brown College, Mark Nesbitt, Vice President of Marketing, Student Life & Alumni, Karen Thomson, President of George Brown College Foundation, Cindy Gouveia, Dean of the Centre for Construction, Engineering & Technology, Adel Esayed, and Chair of the Angelo DelZotto School of Construction Management, Clint Kissoon.
