Walsh Construction celebrates seven new gates opening within LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B
NEW YORK, NY (July 29, 2020) – Walsh Construction, along with joint venture partner Skanska USA, joined the Port Authority of New York and Jersey to celebrate the unveiling of seven new gates within LaGuardia Airport's Terminal B Western Concourse (Concourse A North). Walsh Construction and Skanska USA are operating as the design-build joint venture of Skanska-Walsh, responsible for the terminal's design and construction, in partnership with HOK and WSP, and brought on by LaGuardia Gateway Partners, the private developer and operator of Terminal B.
The seven new gates within the four-level concourse will open to travelers on August 5, one month ahead of schedule, and will service passengers utilizing American Airlines. Customers will experience 55-foot high floor-to-ceiling windows, modern restrooms with carefully selected amenities, and an indoor park with benches, landscaping and trees.
“We’re proud to be part of the latest unveiling within Terminal B that continues to showcase Walsh Construction’s successful partnership with the Port Authority, LaGuardia Gateway Partners, our managing partner Skanska, the design team and subcontractor communities,” said Dan Walsh, co-chairman of Walsh Construction. “Opening one month early, these new gates are a testament to the entire team’s continued commitment to safety, schedule and overall successful project delivery.”
The Terminal B Western Concourse is an almost identical design of the Eastern Concourse, which opened to the public in December 2018. By early 2021, the Western Concourse will house 18 gates in total. Upon full completion, Skanska-Walsh will have delivered 35 new gates for the new Terminal B.
A New LaGuardia Airport Terminal B
The opening of the Western Concourse follows Skanska-Walsh's completion of the new Terminal B Arrivals and Departures Hall (Headhouse), which opened this past June. The four-level Headhouse is the new main entrance for passengers travelling through LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B, featuring 60-foot-tall ceilings and a glass façade that fills the massive hall with natural light. The Headhouse design allows airport customers and employees a seamless integration with the new west parking garage, new concourses, and the Central Hall, which is currently under construction and will connect to Terminal C.
Skanska-Walsh also recently completed the construction of 17 new roadway bridges and more than eight miles of new roadways. Nearly two miles of new taxiway space is also being constructed that will improve aircraft circulation and reduce taxi times, associated delays, and overall carbon emissions from idling aircraft.
In July 2018, Skanska-Walsh opened its first new flyover roadway to LaGuardia from the Grand Central Parkway’s Eastbound Exit 7, the primary roadway or overpass for vehicles accessing the airport, which greatly improved traffic flow and congestion.
The redevelopment of LaGuardia Airport and the new Terminal B, which began in 2016, is a complex multi-phase effort led by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the State of New York.
