Walsh Federal awarded design-build contract for new Sacramento Airport Air Traffic Control Tower
Walsh Federal has been awarded a design-build contract by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for a new air traffic control tower at Sacramento International Airport (SMF). Awarded on September 19, 2026, the contract includes the design and construction of a replacement tower that will support ongoing efforts to modernize critical air traffic infrastructure and improve operational capabilities at the airport.
The new tower will replace the existing facility, which has served Sacramento International Airport since 1967. Located on the airport's north campus, the replacement tower is planned to provide improved sightlines, enhanced security and a modernized working environment for FAA air traffic controllers. Construction is currently expected to begin in summer 2027, with the facility anticipated to become operational around 2030.
The contract award advances plans for a new tower at Sacramento International Airport and supports the FAA's broader initiative to modernize aging air traffic control facilities across the country.
