RDR Teams With Toys for Tots to Bring a Message of Hope to Local Children in Need
Holidays are a time of giving and sharing and reaching out to those in need. In many situations, especially for families who are struggling to make ends meet, the holidays can be one of the most difficult times of the year. Many families are worrying about more important things; such as where they will sleep that night or where their next meal will come from. It’s for that very reason that the Toys For Tots program started in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks and his wife Diane, along with a group of Marine Reservists, collected 5,000 toys to distribute to needy children in Los Angeles, California. That same tradition of giving continues at The Western Wake Freeway project in Raleigh, North Carolina. Raleigh-Durham Roadbuilders (RDR), a joint venture comprised of Archer Western and Granite Construction Company, began the journey to construct the Western Wake Freeway in the latter part of 2009. For the past three years, RDR has collected well over a thousand toys for needy children with their “Fill The Loader” campaign. This year was their best effort yet, as they collected over 500 toys.
