IH-35 Express Managed Lanes Project Named #2 Top Project Start
Ranked #2 on the list is the $1.4-billion IH-35 Express Managed Lanes Project. The two-phase project is a 30-mile expansion of IH-35E, through eight cities and two counties, between U.S. 380 in Denton and I-635 in Dallas. The Archer Western, Granite, Lane team (AGL Constructors) broke ground on the project Oct. 13, 2013 and is expected to be completed in mid-2017. The total cost of the project will be approximately $4.8 billion.
The Design-Build project is expected to relieve traffic congestion in one of the most heavily traveled corridors in the North Texas region and includes the reconstruction, rehabilitation or expansion of 75 bridges, addition of a reversible 18-mile-long managed lane system and the addition of 40 miles (includes north and southbound lanes) of new general-purpose lanes.
One of the highlights of the project is the construction of managed lanes down the middle of the interstate. Managed or tolled lanes give motorists another option when travelling during peak times. The lanes will have dynamic pricing, which means the cost to use the managed lanes will vary depending on the time of day and roadway congestion.
