Walsh Canada Awarded for Outstanding Project Achievement and Green Building Culture
Walsh was presented with an Outstanding Project Achievement Award, in the under $5 million project category, for its successful completion of the Terminal 1 Security in Advance of US Customs West Slab Infill Project at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The West Slab Infill consisted of a 9,000 SF slab extension, reconfiguration of the security and customs check-points, and upgrades to life safety systems. All work was completed without disrupting airport operations. The project required extensive planning and coordination to maintain the safe passage of customers, operational staff, and aircraft. Security and working hour restrictions required unique approaches to construction, such as routing the concrete pump line through a clerestory window, during the night shift, to place the infill slab.
Walsh also received the Green Building Culture Award for adopting environmentally friendly protocols, and demonstrating a commitment to promoting sustainable construction. Walsh is an active member in the Canada Green Building Council, participates in the Evergreen Tree Planting program, uses eco-friendly office products and equipment, and implements green construction practices on all jobsites. The company upholds a LEED education program with more than 30% of its Canada staff possessing LEED designations.
“The awards received by Walsh are a result of the commitment by our staff to be the very best that we can be,” said Craig Lesurf, Vice President and Business Group Leader for Walsh, “The rapid growth of our office in recent years has brought so many new faces to Walsh Canada. Our ability to establish and maintain a culture that promotes excellence and sustainability is a testament to the Walsh brand and the quality of our people.”
Additionally, Lesurf was recognized as the TCA’s incoming Chairman for 2016. As Chairman, Lesurf will lead North America’s oldest and largest mixed Trade organization with over 2000 member firms. He addressed those in attendance, and called for an enhanced commitment to health and safety, and a strengthened voice among association members.
“Get involved with the association in any way that you can,” Lesurf encouraged, “the more individuals that we get involved and take action, the better chance we have in making this industry a better place for all.”
