Walsh/Vinci Installs Final Link to Connect East End Bridge
UTICA, IN / PROSPECT, KY – A major construction milestone has been reached at the Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing project as Walsh/Vinci Construction has successfully placed the last segment to connect the East End Bridge.
Crews installed the last section of structural steel to complete the cable-stayed spans between Utica, IN and Prospect, KY. In total, installation included 55 deck erection sequences and 104 stay cables that anchor the bridge deck to its two 300-foot towers.
Finishing works will now begin along the 2,300 foot cable-stayed bridge that will carry two lanes of north- and south-bound traffic each.
“The connection of the East End Bridge is a testament to the men and women who have dedicated themselves to this historic project,” said Sr. Vice President Steve Kehle, “This milestone begins the home stretch of delivering the East End Crossing to the citizens of Indiana and Kentucky.”
The entire $1.05 billion East End Crossing also includes construction of approaches to the bridge in Kentucky and Southern Indiana as well as an 1,800-foot twin-heading tunnel. The tunnel was constructed utilizing the drill and blast methodology, with waterproofing and reinforced concrete applied within the tunnel.
The East End Bridge is expected to be open to traffic by the end of 2016.
