Early Substantial Completion Achieved on Dugway West Interceptor Relief Sewer
CLEVELAND, OH – Walsh Construction achieved early substantial completion of the Dugway West Interceptor Relief Sewer, a major component of the first phase of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s Project Clean Lake program.
The Dugway West Interceptor Relief Sewer is part of a network of new sewers that will drastically reduce combined sewer overflows in Northeast Ohio. The project includes the installation of 14,000 feet of 108-inch to 24-inch sanitary sewer pipe that will capture and treat 110 million gallons of sewage, reduce raw discharge into Lake Erie, and allow a significant increase in accessibility to clean water.

Construction crews installed a total of 31 shafts utilizing four different types of engineered temporary earth retention systems, including concrete secant piles, steel tight sheeting with steel and reinforced concrete bracing, steel liner plates with ring steel bracing, and pre-engineered slide rail system.
Additionally, the project completed several value engineering methods to deliver cost savings, including the first designed curved micro-tunnel that will save on future maintenance costs. Cost savings measures were also achieved by redesigning the alignment and location of PC-1, and an additional redesign of a hand-mine tunnel, both of which saved on utility relocation costs.
The project was in close proximity to residential properties and schools; construction operations were performed while adhering to the highest safety standards, and the project accomplished a zero lost-time across 250,000 total man hours.
The Dugway West Interceptor Relief Sewer adds to Walsh’s vast tunnel and wastewater portfolio. Walsh was the lead contractor for the Black River Tunnel in Lorain, OH, a 19-foot diameter sewage conveyance tunnel, and the Deep Tunnel Project at Thornton Composite Reservoir in South Holland, IL, which helps to protect drinking water for more than 550,000 residents in the Chicago-area.
