Walsh Uses Slide-In Bridge Construction Along I-70 in Indiana
Walsh Construction achieved early completion of a bridge replacement for westbound Interstate 70 over State Road 121/New Paris Pike in Wayne County, Ind. Walsh used an Accelerated Bridge Construction method and Slide-In Bridge Construction.
The new bridge deck was built on temporary supports adjacent to the existing bridge. After the new bridge was built, westbound traffic was reduced to one lane and temporarily shifted across the median. The existing bridge was demolished and the new bridge was slid laterally into place. The approaches to the new bridge was rebuilt, and traffic will be returned to its normal configuration. This sequencing will occur for replacement of the eastbound bridge as well.
