Walsh Canada completes new patient tower at Etobicoke General Hospital
Toronto, Ontario – William Osler Health System and Infrastructure Ontario have officially opened the new patient tower at Etobicoke General Hospital built by Walsh Canada.
The new four-story wing adds approximately 250,000 square feet to the existing facility and houses the services most urgently needed by the Etobicoke community. The patient tower includes a state-of-the-art Emergency Department, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Critical Care Units, and an ambulatory procedures unit featuring operating rooms, all of which are nearly four times larger than the current space. It also features larger patient rooms filled with natural light and connections to the green spaces that provide increased privacy and space to accommodate family members in a calming environment. In addition, the new wing has a maternal newborn unit with birthing suites, a specialized Level II nursery for patients with non-life-threatening complications, pre and post-op preparatory and recovery areas, a new mental health suite, as well as several dedicated clinic spaces.
Key team members on the project included Walsh Canada as the design-builder, HDR Architecture as lead architect and Engie Services as facility maintenance service provider. Osler Health and Infrastructure Ontario were joined by Axium Infrastructure Canada and DIF Infra 4 Canada Ltd. as co-developers and equity sponsors with Brookfield Securities LP as the financial advisor.
The tower also includes a new main entrance for the hospital, retail space, and expanded site works to improve accessibility and operational efficiencies across the campus. With a focus on sustainable design and construction, the new Patient Tower is anticipated to achieve LEED Silver certification.
“The completion of this project reaffirms Walsh’s position as one of the leading healthcare builders in North America,” said Craig Lesurf, Vice President of Walsh Canada. We are excited to see the positive impact that the new patient tower will have on the community of North Etobicoke and beyond, as well as setting a new standard in the delivery of modern healthcare by Osler Health to its patients.”
