Walsh Construction and Turner Construction break ground on Louisville's new $840 million VA Medical Center
Louisville, KY - Project leaders from Walsh Construction and Turner Construction joined the Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, U.S. Representative John Yarmuth and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer to ceremoniously commence construction on a new $840 million VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
The long-awaited project will replace the Robley Rex VA Medical Center with a 910,000-square-foot hospital, two parking structures, a regional laundry facility, a 42,000-square-foot central utility plant as well as new sidewalks, roadways and other site improvements.
The new hospital will integrate modern patient-centered care concepts to provide the best possible care for Veterans. Also, to specifically address the needs of women Veterans, the new hospital will include a Women’s Health Clinic with 4 Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT).
"This world class healthcare facility will have an enduring positive impact on the lives of veterans for decades to come," said Michael Whelan, president of Walsh Construction's building division.
Walsh Construction and Turner Construction, operating as Walsh-Turner Joint Venture II, have established a goal of awarding approximately $95,000,000 worth of contracts to small businesses. Throughout the project, Walsh-Turner will focus efforts on maximizing small business participation while ensuring a significant amount of that business is awarded to local Louisville and regional firms.

The joint venture of SmithGroup and AECOM is leading the design. The new medical center is anticipated to be complete in late 2025.
