Walsh Construction and Milestone Contractors celebrate opening of new I-69/I-465 Interchange
Indianapolis, Indiana – Walsh Construction and joint venture partner Milestone Contractors joined Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, Vice President Mike Pence, Governor Mitch Daniels, Indiana Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Smith and members of the I-69 Finish Line project team to celebrate the opening of the new I-69 / I-465 System Interchange on the southwest side of Indianapolis.
Built by Walsh Construction and Milestone Contractors, the newly constructed interchange consists of two non-stop flyover ramps connecting I-69 and I-465 just west of the existing State Road 37/Harding Street interchange and will allow traffic to flow freely between the two corridors. This connection, part of the I-69 Finish Line Project, is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s economic stability, opening new growth opportunities for the State of Indiana, and will provide a quicker, safer commute for motorists.
“The transformation that has occurred along the I-69 Finish Line corridor over the past four-to-five years has been amazing to witness,” said INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith. “I cannot overstate the gratitude I have for the thousands of men and women in our industry who have worked countless hours to bring the nation’s newest interstate to fruition.”
The new I-69/I-465 interchange completes the interstate connection between southwest and central Indiana and diverts from the current path of SR 37 north of Edgewood Avenue, just south of I-465. Concurrently, construction continues on I-465 as part of the Finish Line project, with work being performed by Walsh and Milestone.
The I-69 Finish Line Project is the sixth and final section of the I-69 Connection between Evansville and Indianapolis. The overall project upgrades more than 26 miles of the existing State Road 37 to interstate standards from Martinsville to Indianapolis. Work also includes eight miles of new lanes for a wider I-465, more than 35 lane-miles of new local access roads and dozens of bridges being rehabilitated and replaced. The project will eliminate at-grade crossings, construct overpasses and underpasses, build local access road connections and introduce interstate access points through the corridor.
