Walsh Construction begins comprehensive renovation of Island Terrace Apartments
Chicago, Illinois - Walsh Construction and joint venture partner GMA Construction Group joined Senator Dick Durbin and officials from the Illinois Housing Development Authority and the Department of Housing and Urban Development for a ceremony to commence renovations at the Island Terrace Apartments in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood.
The 21-story residential building will receive additional affordability provisions through nonprofit developer, the Preservation of Affordable Housing. The project consists of the renovation of 240 residential units, common areas and offices, while also adding a new 2,600-square-foot addition and enhancement of the exterior façade
The renovations will modify and update new flooring, rooftop units, modernization of the existing hydraulic elevators and exterior enclosure improvements including new roofing, windows, storefront and masonry restoration. Site improvements also consist of a new surface parking lot and recreational area with new landscaping, fencing, lighting and playground equipment.
This will be the first comprehensive renovation to Island Terrace Apartments since its opening nearly 50 years ago. The construction project is anticipated to be complete in late 2025.
